The Genesee Theatre opened in 1927 as one of the grand movie palaces built across the Chicago area during the golden age of cinema. After closing for several years, the theatre was fully restored and reopened in 2004 by the City of Waukegan, bringing its ornate Spanish Revival-style interior, gilded details, and atmospheric ceiling back to life.
Today the Genesee Theatre seats roughly 2,400 guests and hosts a year-round lineup of touring concerts, comedians, tribute acts, and Broadway-style productions. Its restored marquee is a landmark of downtown Waukegan’s Genesee Street arts corridor, just blocks from the Lake Michigan waterfront.
