A Day at the Lake: Waukegan’s Beach & Harbor

Waukegan’s lakefront is the kind of place that rewards an unhurried day. Waukegan Municipal Beach stretches for a mile along Lake Michigan, with natural dunes, open sand, and room for swimming, kiteboarding, or just claiming a spot near the Stiner Pavilion. There are no lifeguards on duty, so it’s a swim-at-your-own-risk kind of beach — the tradeoff is a lot more room to spread out than you’d find somewhere more managed.

A short walk south, the Waukegan Harbor and Marina is worth a look even if you’re not boating — nearly 700 slips, a public promenade, and the kind of sightline across the water that’s easy to underestimate until you’re standing on it.

If your visit lands on a Saturday morning between Memorial Day and late September, Yoga at the Beach runs 8-9am right at Stiner Pavilion — bring your own mat. And if you’ve got kids in tow, Splashin’ Thursdays at Corrine J. Rose Park runs a different themed activity every week, all summer long, free with facility entry.
